Mercedes-Benz pulls out all the stops in E-Class makeover

Lights, cameras, sensors – just some of the 1,000 changes on board the luxury brand's flagship, says Martin Brennan
THE E-Class is of such importance to Mercedes Benz that technology developed for the future new flagship S-Class has been incorporated into the extensively facelifted model, which goes on sale here at the end of March. Cameras, sensors and computers make driving safer and easier, with pedestrian protection high on the agenda.
Eleven new or improved systems are available. Distronic Plus warns the driver if the car veers out of its lane of traffic; Bas Plus picks up crossing traffic and boosts driver braking if necessary; Pre-Safe detects pedestrians ahead and brakes automatically to avoid a collision at speeds up to 50 kmh; Pre-Safe plus picks up an imminent rear-end collision, activates rear warning lights and triggers occupant protection measures (closes windows and tightens seatbelts), and even applies the handbrake to avoid being shunted into the car in front; Active Lane Keeping steers the car away from oncoming traffic if heading for a collision in the same lane; and Adaptive High Beam Plus allows headlights to stay full on but blocks out dazzling lights from oncoming traffic and picks out pedestrians.
The list of options goes on. You are warned of no-overtaking areas and a range of speed and traffic signs are recognised by on-board cameras, sensors and computers so that incidents, such as the one which happened this week where a series of crashes took place on the M50 when a car apparently headed down the wrong way, cannot happen. And the stress-free motoring aids go right down to Parking Assist so there's no more struggling to get into tight spaces.
These are among the state-of-the-art developments, alongside improved suspensions and engines, which are tucked under a whole new exterior for what Mercedes Benz call an early 'super' facelift for the E-Class, as it battles with strong competition from the BMW Series and the Audi A6. Only the roof panel remains the same.
New headlights, bumpers and front and rear-end design changes are among the 1,000 modifications to panels and parts that have been incorporated into the new offering. Nothing has been spared to make the model, which represents 50 per cent of Mercedes Benz sales, a must on the test-drive list for luxury car buyers.

German carmaker Mercedes-Benz is planning to manufacture a new sport utility vehicle (SUV) model at its Alabama manufacturing plant in the US.
To be produced as part of the carmaker's plan to launch 13 new models through 2020, the project involves an investment of $350m and 400 new jobs.
Daimler Board of Management chairman Dieter Zetsche said that the new model destined for the US auto assembly plant would be an SUV.
"At our plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, we are currently preparing for the production of another new SUV: an especially dynamic all-terrain vehicle," Zetsche said.
"You will hear more about that soon."
Expected to enter the production by 2015, the preparations for the new SUV model are currently being executed and will be developed in Vance.
Alabama plant currently employs about 3,000 workers and manufactures the M-Class and GL-Class SUVs in addition to the R-Class crossover.
Mercedes-Benz is also planning to unveil its new S-Class model during mid-2013.
