Mercedes-Benz Announces Hydrogen Sedan for 2017
Visit WaltsMB.com to find your Mercedes-Benz today!
The Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell is helping the automaker make headway into the fuel-cell vehicle market. This model is currently available for lease at dealerships throughout Southern California with 37 leased units on the road as of May 2012. Consumers in Northern California can expect to see B-Class F-Cells at dealerships by July. Mercedes-Benz anticipates a groundswell of support for fuel-cell technology used in the B-Class F-Cell. A broader rollout of the B-Class F-Cell is planned within the next three years. Mercedes-Benz recently announced that a full-sized sedan powered by the company’s fuel stack technology should be available by 2017. This strategy has been developed not only due to the company’s progress on fuel cells but the economic benefits of hydrogen power.
Mercedes-Benz has worked through the Automotive Fuel Cell Cooperation (AFCC) to develop a fuel cell system for the B-Class F-Cell. The AFCC is a Canadian firm with investments from Daimler, Ford and Ballard Power Systems that has researched advanced fuel-cell technologies. The B-Class F-Cell is powered by a 100kW fuel-cell stack and 101kW electric motor. Mercedes-Benz stays on the road with a 1.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a 3.7kg hydrogen storage system. The recent announcement of a new model in 2017 could build on this drive system with a plug-in charging unit.
The estimated performance of the B-Class F-Cell would allow leaseholders to keep up with traditional vehicles. Mercedes-Benz estimates that the current model can travel up to 190 miles before refueling according to Environmental Protection Agency standards. This model reaches 60 miles per hour from a dead stop in 11.4 seconds with a top speed of 106 MPH. An estimated fuel economy of 53 miles per kilogram keeps the B-Class F-Cell competitive with the most fuel efficient vehicles on the market.
The AFCC holds the key for Mercedes-Benz as they invest heavily in fuel-cell models. This collaboration has been integral in developing three generations of fuel-cell stacks with a fourth generation likely for the automaker’s 2017 model. Mercedes-Benz started construction this year on a fuel-cell manufacturing plant near AFCC’s headquarters in Vancouver. Technical teams at AFCC are developing new catalysts and framing materials that balance cost, durability and vehicle range. The AFCC is following a comprehensive plan to keep costs low for their investors and clients. These strategies range from reducing the number of parts needed for a drive system to eliminating sources of energy loss. The Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell benefits from AFCC’s research but should be viewed as a starting point rather than the finish line.
The eco friendly vehicle market already possesses active competition for hybrid and all-electric vehicles. Mercedes-Benz could take a leadership role in the hydrogen market if the B-Class F-Cell takes off in the next five years. The automaker already possesses a long view on fuel-cell vehicles with futuristic concepts like the F125! presented on the auto show circuit. The F125! is a plug-in hydrogen sedan that would combine all-electric power with hydrogen range extension. This concept wouldn’t be available for another two decades based on company projections but Mercedes-Benz has established a clear evolutionary path fueled by hydrogen.

2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK Receives All-Terrain Design
Visit WaltsMB.com to find your Mercedes-Benz today!
The new exterior of the 2013 GLK combines classic elements of an all-terrain vehicle with current Mercedes-Benz design
The newly designed exterior of the 2013 GLK combines classic elements of an all-terrain vehicle with current Mercedes-Benz design style. Stringent lines, expansive surfaces and the smooth-surfaced, volume-emphasizing front and rear areas work together with the distinctive GLK body features. These include short overhangs, the upright front end, slender roof pillars, a steep windscreen and the taut roof line. The body design itself is not a stylistic end but rather, it applies the advantages of typical all-terrain vehicles to the compact GLK. Off-road vehicle features such as approach and departure angle and ground clearance allow the road worthy GLK to head off-road any time. The neatly designed body and the good all-round visibility combined with the seat position enhance suitability for everyday use and provide for relaxed driving.
Beneath the newly designed headlamps, all models offer LED daytime driving lights in a chrome clasp as standard. The radiator grille on the 2013 Mercedes-Benz GLK has two slats and central star, following the design idiom of the current passenger car models. The slats are painted silver, with chrome inserts optional. The headlamps embody a new interpretation of the signature Mercedes lamp design. On the basic model with reflection-type headlamps, a chrome torch feature spans the two reflectors. On models fitted with the Intelligent Light System (ILS), the bi-xenon headlamp comprises the projection unit, a reflector and the torch with LED fibre-optic cables for the position light, above which the turn signal indicators consisting of individual LEDs are located.
A particularly striking feature of the side view is the roof rails, featuring a totally new design tailored to the new design idiom. The polished gallery bar rests on black plastic supports and lends the silhouette a more elegant line. As a welcome side-effect of this new design, the new rails weigh considerably less than their predecessors. This is particularly beneficial to driving dynamics, as a weight reduction in the roof area of a vehicle has a far greater impact than equivalent weight savings in other areas, such as the underbody.
The rear bumper lends a bold, sporty character to the GLK’s rear end with its width-emphasizing lines and delicate tail lights. Particularly striking features here are the new-style simulated underguard – optionally in chrome – and the chrome-plated tailpipe trims integrated in the rear apron which also come as standard. The tail lights have undergone a complete revamp in terms of both appearance and functions. Fibre-optic cables and LEDs are also employed to provide the GLK’s rear end with a unique and characteristic night design, the new licence plate LED lamp adding a finishing touch.
New wheels feature as part of the model facelift, in size 43.2 cm (17-inch), 48.3 cm (19-inch) and 50.8 cm (20-inch) and sporting various paint finishes or a high-sheen finish. An aerodynamically optimised 43.2 cm (17-inch) wheel is also available.
The AMG Sports package for the GLK
For GLK customers who appreciate sporty elegance a comprehensive AMG Exterior Sports package is available, boasting hallmark design features from the renowned customisation company. These include AMG front and rear apron, the specific radiator grille with two chrome slats, AMG LED‑ daytime driving lights, 48.3 cm (19-inch) AMG 5-spoke light-alloy wheels and a sporty suspension setup.

Mercedes-Benz B-Class F-Cell Popular with Celebrities
Visit WaltsMB.com to find your Mercedes-Benz today!
An increasing number of Hollywood stars are opting for eco-friendly mobility from Mercedes-Benz. Actress Diane Kruger is one of more than 35 environmental enthusiasts and early adopters in California who are among the first to drive the locally emissions-free B-Class F-CELL vehicle. This electric vehicle with fuel cells from Mercedes-Benz generates electricity on board in a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen. With a range of around 400 km and short refuelling times, the B-Class F‑CELL combines locally emissions-free mobility with suitability for long journeys and impressive performance. The vehicle produces no emissions, but only pure water.
“I’m excited to be driving the F-CELL. It’s environmentally conscious, fun to drive and gets lots of attention on the streets”, says Diane Kruger. “I can travel around 400 kilometres on a full tank and it’s easy to refuel.” The B-Class F-CELL fuel tank can be filled in just three minutes. It develops 100 kW (136 hp), with fuel consumption equivalent to just 3.3 litres per 100 kilometres. As well as the B-Class F-CELL, Mercedes-Benz has a selection of other vehicles with alternative drive systems, ranging from clean BlueTEC diesel models to hybrid vehicles such as the S 400 HYBRID, the vehicle of choice for Hollywood’s film makers and acting community. The S 400 HYBRID features a convenient start/stop function, which switches off the petrol engine if the car slows to below 15 km/h, for example when stopping at traffic lights. Furthermore, in 2012, Mercedes-Benz will launch the E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID on the European market, and the E 400 HYBRID on the American market.
Other Hollywood stars who have chosen Mercedes-Benz vehicles for eco‑friendly mobility include Golden Globe winner Michelle Williams, Sofia Vergara, Bryan Cranston, 2011 Oscar winner Natalie Portman, Courteney Cox, Renée Zellweger, Katharine McPhee, Serena Williams and Nick Swisher.

Red Carpet Rolled Out for the “Birthday Child”
Visit WaltsMB.com to find your Mercedes-Benz today!
Sixty years of the SL: the legendary sports car celebrated its anniversary at the Techno Classica.
“Number two lives on.”
Legendary engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut would have been proud of the achievement: the first SL sports car was created back in 1952 in the Mercedes-Benz Untertürkheim racing workshop, under his leadership. Almost 60 years later to the day, Mercedes-Benz presented its oldest surviving SL: the restored 300 SL (W 194) with the chassis number 2 made its European trade fair debut at the Techno Classica in Essen.
Klaus Reichert, head of the Mercedes-Benz Classic Center in Fellbach, which coordinated the project, proudly explained how the original body was restored. He said that one of the biggest challenges his team had faced was the low strength of the aluminium/magnesium sheet metal. The original engine was completely overhauled, the interior restored, and the historic paintwork was recreated to match the original as closely as possible – “a technical masterpiece”.
It took a full nine months before Michael Bock, head of Mercedes-Benz Classic, was able to announce: “Number two lives on.” Visitors to the Mercedes-Benz stand at the world’s biggest classic car show were then able to admire the results of this particular “Phoenix rising from the ashes” project.
Princess Diana was also an SL fan – to the displeasure of her compatriots.
Whether as a restored model, disassembled into its individual parts, or as a 1:43-scale model car at the Mercedes-Benz Museum stand, the SL “birthday child” dominated the Mercedes-Benz Classic display over an area of 4,500 square metres in Hall 1. The eight very special representatives of the SL model series held centre stage, ranging from “Number 2” to the very latest SL, which is sure to become a classic car of the future.
The selection included the following: a 500 SL from the R107 model series from 1980 in a rally version that was never raced, an SL 63 AMG (model series R230) that was operated as a Formula 1 Safety Car, and the 500 SL from model series R129 from 1991, which was once also owned by Princess Diana. She was the first member of the British royal family to use a foreign car for private use – owing to public pressure, however, she was forced to change to a domestic make after three months.
“SL stands for quality.”
The 60 years of unbroken fascination elicited by this legendary sports car become directly tangible from the exhibited models. A large measure of the devotion to the car comes from the officially recognised Mercedes-Benz brand clubs. For example, almost all of the 17 German clubs were represented at the 24th classic car show, incorporated in the overall exhibits by Mercedes-Benz Classic. What is the vehicle’s special attraction for club members? “SL stands for quality”, is the pragmatic response of Frank Erbeck, the second chairman of the 190 SL Club. “The cars are so sought after because they are reliable and achieve high added value over a period of years.”
However, the car enthusiast becomes noticeably more emotional when talking about excursions in his open red 190 SL (year of construction 1957) and the excited reactions of the people he meets.
“A love of cars” is what drives Jürgen Kotzlowski from the R/C 107 SL Club. This enthusiast from Düsseldorf believes that the 350 SL was the “last classic car”, since it was the model series that was produced over the longest period, from 1971 to 1989. The club was founded one year after production was discontinued and, with 3,300 members, it has become the largest brand club in Germany.
Experience automotive fascination with all your senses.
Whether classic cars or more recent models, SUVs or Unimog, all the vehicles exhibited in Essen are capable of bringing to life the diverse history of the automobile, a history that is inextricably linked with the Mercedes-Benz brand. As well as the brand clubs, the longstanding partners of Mercedes-Benz Classic also help in this regard. At their stands, visitors were able to admire treasures such as the 540 K Cabriolet B, year of construction 1939.
“One of the most legendary classic cars ever – for kings, maharajahs, leading industrialists and film stars”, a sign informed them. And: “Only 190 units ever built.” An unmistakeable smell of rubber, leather and polished wood hangs over everything – automotive fascination that you can perceive with all your senses.“We’re deadly earnest when it comes to replicas.”
But back to the 300 SL: the sports car was first deployed at the Mille Miglia race in 1952 – it was to be the start of an extremely successful year’s racing. It is hoped to repeat this success 60 years on, with models appearing at the Mille Miglia, and also at Goodwood.
For one alleged member of the sports car family, however, the end of the road was to be the crusher: some months ago, customs officials confiscated an unofficial replica of the 300 SL produced in Germany that was intended for export aboard. Since, under EU law, the body of the sports car is considered a work of applied art and enjoys copyright and utility model protection for another few decades, there was only one thing to do: the body was separated from the chassis and destroyed under legal supervision. “We’re deadly earnest when it comes to replicas”, explains Jürgen Wittmann, head of Archive and
Collections, illustrating Mercedes-Benz’s clearly defined claim to the originality of its vehicles. The fact that the oldest surviving 300 SL 60 is about to take another victory lap, 60 years after its legendary premiere, while its illegitimate “sibling” ended up in the crusher, is a story that Rudolf Uhlenhaut, who was well known for his unconventional sense of humour, would no doubt have enjoyed.

Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster is a Sure Classic
Visit WaltsMB.com to find your Mercedes-Benz today!
The new Mercedes-Benz SLS AMGs might be considered a modern reinterpretation of the original 300SLs. They are gorgeous cars with phenomenal performance capabilities
For the 2012 model year, a Roadster joins the Mercedes SLS AMG Coupe, paying homage to the original drop-top 300 SL. Power for this limited production, two-seat sport touring Roadster is also a 6.3-liter DOHC, 32-valve, naturally aspirated AMG V8 engine with an eight-velocity stack intake and electronic fuel injection. It cranks out 563 hp at 6,800 rpm, along with 479 lb ft of torque at 4,750 rpm.
The motor resides forward in a mid-mount orientation, with power monitored to the rear wheels through a seven-speed AMG Speedshift DCT rear-mounted automatic sports transaxle with AMG Drive unit and an E-Select lever.
The new SLS AMG models are patterned after the old, with a long front hood, short body overhangs, compact cabin and abbreviated tail section. Highlighting the Roadster is the soft convertible top that lowers or raises in mere seconds by operating a console-mounted switch. Also reminiscent of the earlier 300SLs is the wide front grille with its large Mercedes-Benz three-point star .
Old World craftsmanship is evidenced throughout the 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster. AMG's "one-man/one-engine" philosophy lives on, with a single, expert technician responsible for the complete engine assembly.
The interior is a highly refined personal space with a supportively comfortable layout that's executed in both a sophisticated and intuitively functional format. A small T-handle mounted on the center console, serves as an electronic shift lever for the AMG E-Drive unit, which also includes a shift mode knob and buttons for selecting ESP and AMG driving modes, starting and stopping the engine and manually raising the rear wing.
The rotary knob on the AMG E-Drive unit is for selecting the Race Start feature and four specific drive modes - Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus and Manual. AMG shift paddles mounted on the back of the steering wheel control manual shifting. An automatic rev-matching feature makes for smooth downshifting, automatically metering engine speed for load-free downshifts.
My test 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster was finished in Le Mans Red with a Black interior featuring contrasting white stitching and generous amounts of carbon fiber trim elements. The base price was set at $196,100. Adding in the contrast stitching, carbon fiber trim accents, leather/Alcantara wrapped steering wheel, the 1,000-watt Bang & Olufsen Premium Sound System with 11 loudspeakers, dual subwoofers, amplifiers with ICE power technology and illuminated tweeters, AMG flow-formed,10-spoke alloy wheels elevated the cost to $214,725.
SUMMARY: Aside from its stunning visual appeal, the real beauty of the 2012 SLS AMG Roadster is that it idles along contentedly when it needs to. But it is equally at home at triple-digit speeds. It doesn't take long to get there when prodded in a spirited manner.
Complementing the prodigious power, the SLS AMG's suspension consists of double wishbones and track rods at all four wheels - an uncompromising proven racing technology. One also needs to be able to stop safely and quickly, and the SLS AMG comes with two-piece vented disc brakes that are grooved and perforated all around, reducing weight and transferring minimal heat.
Acceleration is blistering - especially for a naturally aspirated engine - and the steering is spot on with instantaneous response. The ride quality is adjustable, and the Comfort selection seemed to be the right setting under normal conditions over varying pavement surfaces. The SLS Roadster makes entry and exit easier when the top is down.
In my opinion, there are no shortcomings - other than the lofty price, which is out of reach for most mere mortals.
The 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Roadster is a thing of beauty to behold, providing an equally beautiful driving experience, along with an exhilarating breath of fresh air. The melodious and thunderous exhaust note is stimulating at any rpm level, rendering the sound system virtually pointless.
The original 300SLs were gorgeous and stellar performers in their heyday, but they lacked the finesse, brute force and technology of the newest versions. The new SLS AMGs are sure to become classics.

The New M-Class: More Miles at Less Cost
Visit WaltsMB.com to find your Mercedes-Benz today!
Nice guys finish last eh? Apparently not if you’re driving the new generation Mercedes-Benz M-Class SUV. With its massive build – five doors, increased length and width, less height, heightened arm and leg space – comes more power.
That’s right — more power. With a smaller engine, that is. Even without the old V6 3-liter turbo, the new twin-turbo diesel 2100 inline four powerplant sheds the same output at less cost – roughly two-thirds the fuel economy of the old engine.
Greater efficiency comes at a price though. Less of a price, actually. It’s price tag is $10,000 less. You get 44 miles per galon, a 1,450km range out of its 93-litre tank, as well as a bunch of savvy features such as automatic start/stop. Of course, improved aerodynamics and brand new electrical systems all help in getting you more miles per drop of diesel.
Need we say more? Fans of the brand in New Zealand are already reaping the benefits of the M-Class SUV’s new engines. So why shouldn’t you?
