2015 Mercedes GLA-Class officially bound for Frankfurt

Forget spy shots, design sketches and teaser videos, here is the 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class. As part of the rapid expansion of its small car offerings, Mercedes-Benz has pulled the cover off this new compact crossover that we'll be seeing up close and personal at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Sharing a platform with the new A-Class and CLA-Class, the GLA will be the fifth SUV/crossover in the Mercedes lineup when it goes on sale in the US in the fall of next year.

From early prototypes of the GLA, the lineage to the A-Class has been obvious, especially when it comes to styling cues like the shape of the C-pillar, the headlights and the front fenders, but everything else seems to have been beefed up to give the GLA a stronger CUV stance. In terms of its size, the GLA is slightly bigger than the A-Class with dimensions that make it a little longer than the Range Rover Evoque as well as lower and about a foot narrower; based on the info provided from Mercedes, the GLA is very similar to the size of the current Kia Sportage (although that is obviously positioned in a different CUV segment).

There are only four pictures of the GLA's interior that show just the front portion of the cabin, which appears to be a direct carryover from the A-Class. Mercedes will first launch the GLA250 4Matic, which uses a turbocharged and direct-injected 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine producing 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Performance should be quite impressive – Mercedes promises a 0-60 time of 6.4 seconds. In 2015, front-wheel-drive versions of the GLA250 will go on sale, but there is still no official word on the GLA45 AMG. Scroll down for more details about the 2015 Mercedes GLA-Class from the official press release.

Teaser for 2014 Mercedes-Benz GLA

We know Mercedes-Benz is planning a new compact crossover based on the platform underpinning the CLA and to be labeled a “GLA.” We also know the vehicle is scheduled for a debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show on September 10. Now we have our first official look thanks to these teaser sketches, posted up on Mercedes’ Facebook page.

This isn’t the GLA concept car we saw at the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show but the production GLA set for a debut next month and due in showrooms towards the end of the year, as a 2014 model.
The sketches show a rugged vehicle that’s managed to maintain the svelte lines of the previous concept. They also show that the GLA will be one of the best-looking vehicles in its segment. Key competitors are the BMW X1, Range Rover Evoque and upcoming Lincoln MKC.

We’ve also seen numerous prototypes, though these have been heavily camouflaged. Shots of the interior showed a layout virtually identical to that found in the CLA. Engines, too, are likely to be shared with the CLA so expect the GLA’s base engine to be a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. A high-performance AMG model is also planned.

Mercedes-Benz CW 311 Supercar, aka Isdera Imperator Prototype for Sale in Germany

An ultra-rare classic Mercedes-Benz CW 311 prototype (originally conceived as a rival for the Ford GT40) is up for sale in Germany, for just under one million euros.

It’s the car that Mercedes didn’t want to put into production, and so, in order for it to still get made, the very low volume Isdera brand was born – their own variant, called Imperator 108i,  was a direct descendant of the Mercedes model.
With production figures in the dozens, these vehicles are extremely rare, and even in their native country, few get to see them. The price could be justifiable by the exclusivity alone, but for the money, you get a very special car, with an interesting story, and excellent performance figures, even by today’s standards – this one gets a 5.5-liter V8, which pumps out a claimed 405 PS (400 hp), and it’s good for a top speed of 300 km/h (186 mph).

Factor in the added bonus of it being a prototype and you’ll be able to justify it to your wife in no time, and aside from that there’s also the design which is at least interesting, and the car seems younger than its production year of 1984 would suggest.
