Mercedes-Benz is about to embark on what its new U.S chief executive says its biggest growth phase ever in the U.S., refreshing or replacing 19 existing models while adding 11 new models in segments where it has never competed on the way to 2020.
The new products will range from a new, smallest Mercedes in the U.S., the CLA Class, to a stretched version of its biggest, the super-luxe S-Class. There will even be a convertible version of the compact C Class to lure younger buyers.
“That’s a nonstop product cadence,” says Steve Cannon, CEO of Mercedes-Benz USA in an interview with USA TODAY about the expansion only a week after divulging his plans to dealers around the country, meeting in Las Vegas.
It’salso a bold bet. Despite increasing competition from other automakers, Cannon believes there will be enough new and existing luxury customers to roll out the bevy of new vehicles.
He says he doesn’t think thje new automotive eye candy will be cannibalizing customers from other Mercedes models. “In most cases, our expansion really provides us with an opportunity to talk to a new customer,” he says.
Where will those new customers come from? He already knows: Gen Y, the millennials. With the leading edge now in their early 30s, Cannon says many are ready to step into the luxury market. And the goal is to keep them through all their driving years, moving successively up the model ladder with every promotion and raise.
“We’re a brand we think can absolutely connect with them,” Cannon says. “Gen Y is just coming of age. We get on their radar screen in a big way.”
One big lure: the new, small CLA and various iterations — small, more fuel-efficient and as Mercedes-Benzes go, more affordable. It’s coming for 2013, along with a redone E Class, a critically important sedan for Mercedes, and the new S Class flagship.
Another big lure: The droptop version of the C Class will give Mercedes the chance to offer an affordable convertible, a compact that should also draw in Gen Y, he says. Right now, the lowest-priced Mercedes droptop is an E Class costing more than $50,000.
The seventh generation of the S Class will come in an extended version that adds 10 inches to the wheelbase. “It all goes into the back seat,” he says. One benefit of the new version will be to try to lure customers who might have considered the Maybach, which has been discontinued. “We’re now offering a really awesome alternative,” Cannon says.

MONTVALE, NJ (October 16, 2012) – Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) has introduced an enhanced mobile version of mbusa.com that enables it to communicate key brand and product attributes to customers, provide valuable vehicle information and ensure that customers are efficiently connected with Mercedes-Benz dealers at any time from their mobile device. MB USA has teamed with mobile and multi-channel platform company Usablenet to create this dedicated mobile web experience designed specifically for smartphone users.
Over the last year, mobile traffic to mbusa.com has grown by 170 percent. In response to this strong customer demand, Mercedes has enhanced its mobile site to offer customers a seamless experience while engaging with the brand from their mobile phones.
“Mercedes-Benz USA is committed to deepening customer engagement through a branded mobile experience that measurably drives consideration of Mercedes-Benz vehicles,” said Eric Jillard, department manager, digital marketing & CRM at MBUSA. “Usablenet enables us to reach the on-the-go customer with a unique and brand-commensurate mobile experience that reinforces our brand equity, supports customer loyalty, and adds value to the vehicle research and purchase journey.”
The new smartphone-optimized site delivers a luxury user experience through deep understanding of the car buyer’s behavior and needs. It offers:
“The modern car buyer does not wish to be tethered to their computer to research vehicles,” said Usablenet Chief Marketing Officer Carin Van Vuuren. “Instead, today’s shoppers are demanding an ‘always-on’ digital approach from automotive brands that includes a strong mobile component. With the recent enhancements made to the mobile user experience, Mercedes-Benz is setting a high standard for multi-channel engagement that is consistent with its storied brand.”
To acquire additional qualitative feedback on what its mobile customers expect, Mercedes is planning to launch a mobile user survey later this year to receive direct feedback from its mobile customers in order to deliver a consistently innovative and useful mobile experience.

The flavor didn't matter. From the fuel-sipping, diesel-powered GL350 to the "how can this be the weaker of the two V-8s?" GL450 to the "3-ton objects should not move this quickly" 429-hp GL550, Mercedes has built an SUV that's better than the rest. Not just in its competitive class: The new, second-generation GL is the best new SUV on the market period, and the winner of our prize.

Fans of the Mille Miglia race are about to get a treat as the Mercedes-Benz Museum is showcasing the “Mille Miglia – Passion and Rivalry” exhibition. The exhibition started October 10 and is set to run all the way through January 6, 2013.
The exhibition is made possible through the cooperation of the Museo Mille Miglia. It features nine vehicles (from Mercedes and from competitors as well) that have participated in the 1,000-mile race previously. Aside from vehicles like the Mercedes-Benz SSK, Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, and Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR, the vehicle showcase also includes legendary cars from Alfa Romea, Ferrari, and Lancia.
Vehicles aren’t the only items on display—attendees will also be able to marvel at photos and texts about the different drivers and the races that made the Italian event so spectacular and popular.
The Mille Miglia open-road race started in 1927 and had a long run through 1957. It took competitive race cars on the road for a total of 1,000 miles, going nonstop from Brescia to Rome, and then heading back to Brescia again.

Earlier this year Mercedes-Benz announced the 45th anniversary edition of the SL 65 AMG and now they have prepared a similar version of the SLS AMG GT3. Wearing an exclusive matt paintwork, this special model rides on AMG light alloys in designo magno graphite.
What’s more important is that carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) is used for the doors, boot lid, hood, mudguards, front/rear apron, rear wings, rear diffuser and front splitter. Moving on the inside, we find the steel roll-over cage that has the same finish as the exterior, while the center console and the dashboard feature a similar matt carbon fiber appearance.
Under the hood it’s the same AMG V8 6.3-liter engine that enables the race car to perform the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) sprint in 3.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 186 mph (300km/h).
In Germany, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3 45th Anniversary edition costs 446,250 euros (including VAT).
