“The more you have traveled, the more you realize how little you have seen.” Gunther Holtorf and his late wife Christine, are truly an adventurer’s inspiration.  Having been traveling in a Mercedes Benz G-Wagon, which he named Otto, for the past 23 years, Gunther has covered an approximate 500,000 miles (800,000km), the equivalent of 20 times around the world.

It began back in 1989, as the Berlin Wall fell, Gunther and Christine set out on what was meant to be an 18-month tour of Africa in their Mercedes-Benz G Wagon.  The German former airline executive has travelled the world in Otto, never having a serious breakdown.  The engine always started for him and he was able to fix nearly every problem on his own immediately, a testament to Mercedes’ engines.

His G-Wagon has taken him to several amazing places around the world, his story is inspiring.  Watch the video below or visit to photo gallery to see some of the amazing places he’s managed to take his beloved gelandewagen, Otto.

"I had the best sales person Charlie from Walter's Mercedes in Riverside. This was my first time leasing a car so I was a little nervous. He was excellent and very knowledgeable. He gave me all the information needed to make me feel confidant to lease my new C250. The service was great! Thank you, Charlie for your excellent care, service and help."

"I just received a call from Duc Truong about a two weeks ago while on vacation in Yosemite asking me if I would be interested in coming in to go over my lease contract and see if there was anyway he could get me into a new car (even though there was a year left on my lease). I finally made time to go in and see him again (Duc sold us our first Mercedes also). When I came in, Duc was super courteous and friendly (much like the last time I was there) and jumped on our meeting right away! We looked at a car, test drove it, got the paperwork going and were out of there within a couple short hours! Between him and Paul, the Sales Manager (who is also an amazing guy!) they were able to put us in the new car we wanted, take our old car and lower our monthly payment by $100!! Both my wife and I are happy campers and (again) happy customers of Duc's! Thanks again guys! :)"

"Best car buying experience I have ever had! I was in and out in no time without the typical runaround that can be expected with purchasing a car. Just over two years ago I purchased a car from their direct competitor across the street and had a bad experience. I was thankful this experience was a lot more straightforward and painless. I would highly recommend this dealership and my salesperson Bob Murray."

Mercedes-Benz Confirms A-Class-Based Crossover

Visit WaltsMB.com to find your Mercedes-Benz today!

Mb

We knew that it was coming, but now we have confirmation – Mercedes-Benz will launch a compact crossover based on the A-Class to compete with the BMW X1 and Audi Q3.

The confirmation comes along with the announcement of the start of production for the all-new 2012 A-Class hatchback (pictured here). Mercedes listed the three new front-wheel drive models that will be built at its Rastatt, Germany plant: the A- and B-Classes – both now in production – and the new compact SUV. All three cars share the same Mercedes Front Architecture front-wheel drive platform, which will also be found under the upcoming CLA-Class four-door coupe and a yet-to-be-named Infiniti compact.

Mercedes declined to comment further about the new crossover, but we’ve already reported extensively on what to expect for the new small SUV. Thanks to the brand’s new naming scheme, look for this model to wear the GLA badge – G to denote SUV and A to denote the A-Class range. While primarily front-wheel drive, the GLA will also offer all-wheel drive. Power options will be spread across three gas and three diesel engines rated anywhere from 109 hp to 211 hp. Topping the range will be the high-performance GLA45 that uses a twin-turbocharged 2.2-liter I-4 good for 350 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque.

With its 174.8-inch length, expect the GLA to almost mirror the proportions of BMW’s X1 crossover and be slightly roomier than Audi’s Q3. The design is expected to clean and almost-coupe-like with an upright grille with dual crossbars, LED headlights, and taillights with triple-chamber graphics like the 2013 GLK.

No word yet on when the GLA will begin production at the Rastatt plant, but expect to see the baby Benz SUV to go on sale for the 2015 model year.

Mercedes-Benz E550: All things to all people

Visit WaltsMB.com to find your Mercedes-Benz today!

Mb

The hood ornament is something that has mostly disappeared in car design. I kind of miss them. I think they add a certain flair to a vehicle.

So I was happy to see that my tester for the week, the 2012
Mercedes-Benz E550, had one.

That emblematic Mercedes logo roosted proudly on the hood of the E550, and rightfully so. The E550 is a vehicle that epitomizes Mercedes-Benz.

This five-person sedan combines high-quality luxury with top-notch engineering. No wonder that hood ornament was there, almost like a badge of approval.

And under that hood resides one powerful, well-tuned engine. The 4.6-liter bi-turbo V8 engine cranks out 402 horsepower and 443 lb./ft. of torque. And, as is the case with most German vehicles, the E550 is not shy about letting the torque be felt.

The Mercedes-Benz E550 pulls like a freight train. New for this model year is a standard 4Matic all-wheel drive system that makes sure that freight train stays on the rails. And indeed, the E550 instinctively grips the road as the engine works flawlessly with the 7-speed driver-adaptive transmission.

Also new to this model year for the E-series is electromechanical steering (replacing a hydraulic steering system). All of this engineering is not transparent to the driver, but felt throughout the flawless driving experience.

A meticulous interior does not disappoint either. Black leather seats comfort all passengers while the driver is especially spoiled with extra lumbar support and a massaging seat. Details like the black ash wood trim should not go unnoticed, as it’s touches like this and the high-quality materials that make this Mercedes stand out as a luxury brand.

Subtle nuances highlight the E550’s exterior design. The sedan lacks garish styling, instead opts for simple, clean lines and a stout appearance. The grille is equally understated, and the only real pizzazz is in the rear of the car where dual chrome tailpipes give a hint to its powerful side.

Despite such a big engine, the E550 remains relatively fuel-efficient. EPA estimates are 16 city
and 26 highway. In a week’s worth of heavy-footed driving I averaged nearly 21 MPG. Premium fuel is required, and adds to the cost.

The entire E-series is one of Mercedes’ most versatile lines. There are five variants within
the E-series, including a powerful station wagon that seats up to seven passengers, a four-passenger coupe, and even a convertible. Two sedan variants reside in the E350 series as well as the E550.

Because of this versatility, prices range from $50,000 for the E350 model to more than $90,000 for the souped-up E63 AMG. My tester had an MSRP of $59,790, but with several upgraded packages, including the sport package (with 18-inch AMG alloy wheels and lowered sport suspension), my tester came in at $75,655.

The Mercedes-Benz E-series is all things to all people looking for luxury, power and performance.

"After driving a Mercedes for over 14 years and much prayer, I went to Walters Mercedes-Benz to consider purchasing another car. I was greeted so warmely by Juan Carlos Rasilla who was also professional in his demeanor as well as his look. He demonstrated so much knowledlge about the E-350 I was interested in purchasing. During the test ride, Juan Carlos was businesslike, courtesous, and answered questions promptly without exhibiting impatience. He made sure I was confortable at all times. Upon the return back to the dealership, the professionalisum continued when I was introduced to Julio Guerrero (finance manager). Julio was also warm and kind; he answered all of my questions to satisfaction. I left there driving my 2009, E-350 Mercedes-Benz - feeling so much joy and thanking God for the blessing!

I would recommend Walters Mercedes-Benz Dealership to anyone, the experience was very positive. They treat you like family members not strangers."

Mercedes-Benz Museum Offers a One of a Kind Look at Automotive History

Visit WaltsMB.com to find your Mercedes-Benz today!

Mb

The Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart, Germany is the only museum in the world that can document, in a single continuous timeline, over 125 years of automobile history from its very beginnings to the present day. On nine levels and covering a floor space of 16,500 square metres, the museum presents 160 vehicles and over 1,500 exhibits. As a place of innovation, it also demonstrates that history can point the way ahead.

The exhibition not only presents the fascinating history of the Mercedes-Benz brand, it also affords illuminating insights into the future. This dual function is also reflected in the architecture of the Mercedes-Benz Museum, designed by the UNStudio of Dutch architects van Berkel and Bos, Amsterdam, also responsible for Tribeca’s Five Franklin Place.  The museum’s interior is inspired by the double helix structure of the DNA spiral that carries the human genome. This in turn illustrates the Mercedes-Benz brand’s philosophy – to continuously create radically new products to advance the cause of human mobility.

During a two-hour tour of the exhibit, visitors experience a unique journey through automotive history. Transported by lift to the uppermost level of the museum, the visitor arrives back in the year 1886, where two museum tours gradually spiral their way down through the extensive collection and back to the museum exit.

The first of the tours consists of seven Legend rooms which narrate the chronological history of the brand. The second group tours five separate Collection rooms filled with vehicles, which thematically document the breadth and diversity of the brand portfolio and collection. Visitors may choose to switch from one tour to the other at any time as both tours finish at the banked curve entitled Silver Arrows – Races & Records. The exhibition is finished off by the Fascination of Technology display, which offers a glimpse into day-to-day work at Mercedes-Benz and also presents topics concerning the future of the automobile.

Continue reading for a more detailed look at the collections at the Mercedes-Benz Museum, or better yet, start planning your trip to Stuttgart now.

Museum Collections

The exhibition at the Mercedes-Benz Museum is divided into Legend rooms and Collection rooms. The Legend rooms narrate the history of the Mercedes-Benz brand, dividing it into themes and epochs. The rooms are ordered chronologically and the exhibition is fully through-designed. The Collection rooms are arranged thematically and document the breadth and diversity of the brand’s vehicles. The Fascination of Technology on Level 0 offers a glimpse into present-day Research & Development at Mercedes-Benz.

The seven Legend rooms, which take visitors on a chronological journey through the history of the automobile to the present day, are each linked by 80-metre ramps. With the exception of the first and last rooms, the Legend tour is designed in line with a consistent principle: along the outside of a curved, clover-leaf wall, a ramp sweeps down to the vehicles, which form the focal point of each display. While visitors can look down at the exhibits to the right-hand side, a chronological display on their left illustrates key events in corporate history as seen against their specific historical backdrop. The Legend rooms offer a striking illustration of the context in which epoch-making innovations in automotive engineering were made.

Each Legend room illustrates a particular era by developing a central theme. These include the invention of the independent, petrol-driven road vehicle, the origin of the Mercedes brand, the development of the supercharger and diesel engine, the Gullwing and semi-forward control trucks of the 1950s, the increasing importance of safety and environmental protection, the brand’s global presence, and in the final Legend room the complete history of racing and record-breaking cars.

  • Legend 1: Pioneers – The Invention of the Automobile, 1886 – 1900
  • Legend 2: Mercedes – Birth of the Brand, 1900 – 1914
  • Legend 3: Times of Change – Diesel and Supercharger, 1914 – 1945
  • Legend 4: Post-war Miracle – Form and Diversity, 1945 – 1960
  • Legend 5: Visionaries – Safety and Environment, 1960 – 1982
  • Legend 6: New Start – The Road to Emissionfree Mobility
  • Legend 7: Silver Arrows – Races & Records

The Collection rooms: thematic layout

The generously designed Collection rooms accommodate a large number of exhibits providing broad coverage of the background to each themed room.

The themes range from travel by bus, taxi or passenger car, goods transportation and distribution, the Gallery of Helpers documenting firefighting, the emergency services and municipal operations, celebrity cars, the Gallery of Heroes, with exhibits from everyday situations and changing special exhibitions.

Discreet floor graphics reminiscent of road markings indicate the topic of each Collection room and the direction to be taken through the vehicle layout. The vehicles in the Gallery of Helpers, for example, are all oriented towards a focal point in the centre of the space, while the Gallery of Celebrities is displayed on high-quality wooden plinths.

Alongside the ramp linking each Legend tour to one of the Collection rooms is a glass showcase, viewable from both sides. On the outside it displays model vehicles, on the inside smaller exhibits such as vehicle parts, accessories and promotional articles. A “micro-cinema” also shows films illustrating the topic of each Collection room.

  • Collection 1: Gallery of Voyagers
  • Collection 2: Gallery of Carriers
  • Collection 3: Gallery of Helpers
  • Collection 4: Gallery of Celebrities
  • Collection 5: Gallery of Heroes

Emotional finale at the banked curve

Both the Legend and Collection tours end up at the “Silver Arrows – Races & Records” display, where a steep banked curve sweeps around the entire exhibition space, gradually becoming a vertical, cylindrical wall studded with famous record-breaking cars.

Legend 7 is an emotional finale to the museum tour. On entering this area, visitors are able to take a seat on a grandstand opposite the banked curve, either to savour the impressive overall image for a while or view film footage of historic motor races shown on six different monitors. The grandstand is connected to a passageway behind the banked curve, which opens out into a “racing tunnel” leading to the Legend room devoted to “Races & Records”. Original memorabilia from famous racing drivers and two racing simulators offer visitors a further opportunity to immerse themselves in the fascinating world of motorsport.

The banked curve gradually becomes a vertical wall on which famous record-breaking cars are mounted – from the record-breaking W 125 of 1938 to the solar-powered Solarmobile, which won the Tour de Sol from Lake Constance to Lake Geneva in the mid 1980s. At the centre of this cylindrical display, five platforms rise from the lower level of the connecting building, displaying experimental vehicles past and present. These exhibits link the museum tour with the Fascination of Technology display area, which covers an area of 800 square metres and showcases the current state of development and gives a prospect of the future.

Mercedes-Benz Tops In Dealership Experience

Visit WaltsMB.com to find your Mercedes-Benz today!

Mb-b

Mercedes-Benz is still topping out in the U.S. when it comes to how its dealers treat shoppers. The Montvale, N.J.-based automaker, which was in the top five of J.D. Power & Associates dealership experience survey last year behind Lexus and Cadillac, takes the top position in the latest Pied Piper Prospect Satisfaction Index (PSI). The PSI is a mystery shopper-based study that the firm conducted between July last year and June this year, using 4,419 hired anonymous people to shop at dealerships. Mercedes has been the number one in the study for the past four years, based on a process that ties mystery shopping measurement and scoring to industry sales success. Acura, Infiniti and Lexus dealerships tied for second.

Below industry average in the study were Chevrolet, Chrysler, Ford, Land Rover, Mini, Smart, Dodge Hyundai, Scion, Audi, Jeep, Kia, Porsche, Suzuki, and Mitsubishi. But Mitz, Suzuki, Scion, Dodge, Smart, Ford and Chrysler all improved.

Mercedes-Benz dealerships led all brands in 10 of the 60 different sales activities measured by PSI, such as the salesperson introducing him or herself, providing a thorough test drive and focusing attention on three to five memorable features or benefits. Twenty-two different brands led at least one sales process category. Cadillac salespeople were, for example, the most likely to mention the availability of different financing options. Nissan salespeople were most likely to ask for the sale, and Toyota dealerships were most likely to give compelling reasons to buy from their specific dealership.

The study finds that overall auto industry performance improvement was widespread, with twenty-four of thirty-four auto brands improving PSI performance from 2011 to 2012. The firm said that 78% of the individual sales process factors improved. Auto salespeople were 11% more likely than in last year's study to address specific features or benefits relevant to the shopper, 8% more likely to mention the availability of different financing options, and 7% more likely to provide a walk-around demonstration.

Particular differences abound: Pied Piper says that salespeople at Subaru, Buick and Volkswagen dealerships were 50% more likely to offer a brochure to a shopper than were salespeople at Hyundai, Jeep or BMW dealerships; and Jaguar, Volvo and Infiniti salespeople were almost twice as likely to point out features unique from competitive vehicles when compared to Chrysler, Mitsubishi and Jeep salespeople.

“This year’s record high PSI results show that today’s dealership employees work harder than ever to be helpful to car shoppers,” said Fran O’Hagan, President and CEO of Pied Piper Management Company LLC. “A dealership’s success depends upon many factors that are very difficult for dealerships to change. In contrast, dealership sales effectiveness is simple to measure and simple to change.”

On average -- and not that surprising -- the top performing auto brands as measured by PSI tend to be brands with higher average sales per dealership. Similarly, individual dealership improvement of sales effectiveness on average also accompanies gains in market share.
